Once in a while, I’ll come across some political talking head or politician (mostly “conservative”) grandstanding and screaming some nonsense about Hollywood progressives. I’m guessing I’m in a different universe or sucking on crazy pills.
My concept of the word “progressive”, in context, would be the embracing of values or principles that are beneficial in the social development of an individual or group. The “good news” is that Hollywood has made good on this in the promotion of gay and women rights. It is somewhat sketchy on religious tolerance since they seemingly have an aversion to all things of a Judeo-Christian nature.
And then there is two-faced treatment of the black community. Yeah, I’m gonna go there.
Sure the use of rap and other “urban” sounds have permeated where the likes of Motley Crue and Van Halen once reigned supreme in the soundtrack division. As from that car commercial, when was the last time did you Crue’s Jumpstart My Heart in an action sequence? Yeah, I thought so and damn, I miss those days. Yes, even my white sisters have shown that they can hold their own when it comes to dance moves. Wow, seems like a cut and dry case of good ole fashioned progressiveness. Yeah, maybe.
In my posting prior to this one, I was talking about the movie Red Tails. One of the things that came up about the movie of various bits of media was the reluctance of many Hollywood executives tp greenlight or even bankroll the venture. The reason for such hesitation and ponderance: Red Tails, a movie about black airmen in World War II, had to large a (omg!!!) black cast. I kid you not. I truly wish I was making this stuff up. Seriously, Hollywood? Oh sure, it was easy to bankroll 50 Cents so-called biopic “Get Rich of Die Tryin” or that Hustle and Flow crap which … by the way … had (omg!!!) a predominantly black cast, but for some reason a true story about black airmen that helped save the world from sprechen Deutsche and dressing up in leiderhosen (seriously, I suck in leiderhosen) is verboten. I guess some folks in Hollywood don’t want to take the risk of having black folks leaving the theaters feeling … what are the words that I’m looking for …. ah yes, empowered, patriotic, or even (gasp!!!) proud. Hmm, I guess we need to re-examine the definition of progressiveness, here, Hollywood.
We survived another Oscar night, but one can’t help but notice the disproportionate nominees and winners that were black in comparison to their white counterparts. And as so many white actors win Oscars for eloquent roles such as prime ministers, scientists, butlerss, activists and even coaches, when it comes to blacks (aside from Sidney Potier) the titles include corrupt cops, pimps, overweight, sexually molested teens, and sexed-up, widowed, single mothers. Seriously ? When movies like “Something the Lord Made” didn’t (surprise, surprise) make it to the silver screen and performances by the likes of Mos Def who plays the black doctor that pioneered open heart surgery is discounted. Sure, he got an Emmy but not good enough to in the same league of pimp wanting to be a rapper (Hustle and Flow) to earn an Oscar. For anyone that can remember, can you remember the marketing that went into Get Rich or Die Trying in comparison to that of Aqueelah and the Bee. If you have to ask what was Aqueelah and the Bee, then it is far worst than I imagine. Hollywood. Progressive. Really? By what standards?
As a former engineering student you learn to make conclusions based upon where the emperical data leads you. So with that in mind it is safe to assume that there is some subconscious fear in Hollywood in encouraging greatness and better behavior in the black community, and feels more comfortable rewarding the very things that appeal to the lower denominations that keeps the black community marinating in dysfunction. Some may used the age-old argument of “giving the people what they want”. Considering the same argument with recovering drug addicts: if they at some point in time start begging for drugs … will you give it to them? I’m guessing no. Yet as the black community struggles with its dysfunctions and the few minions are begging for that celluloid “fix”, Hollywood “progressives” thinks it is okay to give into the “addictions”. Sad. I guess it sort of keeping us in our place. Literally. So when folks are lamenting about Hollywood’s progressiveness, I do wonder what eyes they peering through. Great if I’m gay, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, or (dare I say) female. Personally, the so-called progressiveness of Hollywood has no space for black community and makes the 1940s sorta look damned near-civilized. I beg to differ and remain unimpressed.
